A school best friend transforms a child’s experience—but only if they are widely well-liked.

While Ariana Grande famously performed the track “Popular” during her performance in Wicked, scientific investigators at Concordia University have discovered that her musical assertion contains a notable degree of accuracy.

Securing a highly regarded companion during primary education stages can significantly enhance a young person’s standing among classmates.

“When attempting to forecast long-term prosperity in mature life—identifying who will thrive versus who might face incarceration—the most reliable indicator centers on a youth’s capacity to engage effectively alongside classmates during childhood and teenage life stages,” remarked Dr. William Bukowski, a faculty member within the psychological sciences division at Concordia University.

Within a newly published academic paper, titled “Social exclusion, but not withdrawal, is diminished by a friend’s level of acceptance: A provisions model,” Bukowski alongside primary investigator Melissa Commisso, a practicing mental health practitioner based out of the Montreal General Hospital, monitored a cohort of 252 pupils across four primary educational institutions in the Montreal region.

The primary objective involved examining the distinct ways companionship influenced two forms of childhood isolation: intentional detachment—defined as opting for solitude due to bashfulness or internal apprehension—and active rejection, which involves being deliberately isolated by classmates.

Participating individuals enrolled in the fifth and sixth grades were instructed to catalog their primary companions throughout a two-month observation window running from September through November.

Additionally, these students were prompted to flag any peers whose behaviors aligned with characteristics of being detached or actively ostracized by the wider classroom environment.

“It is possible to differentiate between two unique categories of vulnerable youth: those individuals who actively separate themselves from the collective unit, alongside those individuals who find themselves actively pushed out by the collective unit,” Bukowski explained.

Relational Advantage

The investigation’s creators monitored couples of closest companions to observe the manner in which their connections progressed and transformed throughout the observation window, and the consequences this carried for them as individuals, as partnerships, and across the broader classroom collective.

“Peer connections are exceptionally vital throughout this formative window,” Commisso noted. “Youths acquire significant insights via their companions. They refine their interpersonal capabilities through interactions with their buddies.”

The academic team noted they additionally determined that, beyond merely possessing a close companion, it proved critical, from an interpersonal standpoint, for that companion to be highly regarded by the wider student body.

The underlying mechanism? Expressed plainly, this specific companion acts to elevate the interpersonal rank of youths within their immediate network upon being brought into contact with the rest of the student body.

“The mere presence of a companion is insufficient; rather, the specific attributes of the companion a youth possesses are what truly carry weight,” Commisso stated. “Throughout our observation, we note that it centers on a companion who possesses relational advantage.”

Participating in healthy peer connections during early life stages, the academic team emphasized, yields diverse advantages including acquiring insights regarding group integration, mutual reliance, social favor, and encouragement—alongside a reduced probability of facing intentional group rejection.

This protective effect, conversely, does not hold true for those individuals who opt for internal detachment from engaging with their classmates.

In scenarios where the isolation is entirely self-imposed, the creators noted, possessing a companion failed to incentivize a youth to interact more broadly with the rest of the collective.

Curiously, an isolated youth who formed a connection with an individual who was also poorly regarded did not ultimately experience any shift in their interpersonal rank across the broader collective.

While such youths might still gain value from the psychological encouragement yielded by the partnership, they faced a lower probability of experiencing enhanced integration among the rest of the student body.

Social Preference Against High Status

Nonetheless, Bukowski emphasized that being highly regarded by peers does not automatically equate to possessing mainstream popularity.

“High status reflects a person’s standing within a hierarchy, whereas peer acceptance signifies a genuine emotional connection between individuals,” he explained during a conversation with CTV News. “Throughout our project, we focused specifically on the outcomes of peer acceptance. We discovered that possessing a companion who enjoys elevated acceptance significantly assists marginalized youths in navigating their daily interactions.”

Consequently, what steps should guardians take if they harbor anxieties regarding their offspring’s standing inside their small peer networks?

“Guardians can assist their offspring in identifying the specific qualities they desire in a companion, as well as recognizing the peers with whom they should cultivate these bonds,” Bukowski remarked.

“Certain youths likely hold the mistaken belief that aligning themselves with a prominent peer is the most advantageous path forward; however, our data demonstrates that—at least for marginalized youths—it is far more beneficial to form a bond with a peer who is genuinely respected by the group rather than someone who merely holds a high-status position. While that distinction might appear minor on the surface, I believe it carries significant weight.”
