Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Italy is preparing to ban the burqa and hijab in schools and introduce a legal limit on the number of foreign students in classrooms.
She Said, a national youth festival organised by the youth group of her Brothers of Italy party, Meloni said Italian students should not feel like a minority in their own classrooms. “Italian children cannot feel like a minority in the classroom,” Meloni said.
“It’s unthinkable that in an Italian classroom, Italian children feel cornered because they’ve become the minority. It can’t be done,” she added.
Meloni also said that no one should be able to decide, in the name of a real or supposed tradition, that a young woman must cover herself.
The proposed measures would also require parents of foreign students who are struggling to integrate into Italy’s school system to learn Italian.
Meloni highlighted migration as a major challenge for Italy, which is among the European countries most exposed to migrant arrivals because of its central Mediterranean location.
The announcements came as Meloni emphasised her right-wing credentials while addressing young supporters at the party-organised event.
