A Russian drone hit a passenger train on Ukraine’s border with NATO member Poland on Sunday, shortly after former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other European diplomats had used the same line.
The train, on a route frequently used by foreign delegations returning from Kyiv, was attacked just 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) from the Polish border, Ukraine’s railway operator said.
No casualties were reported.
“This wasn’t our train, but the one just minutes after us by the border crossing. It was evacuated as the drone approached and no one was hurt,” Carl Bildt, former Sweden’s Prime Minister said on X.
He and other politicians were returning to Europe by train after attending a conference in Kyiv.
“It is entirely possible that the Russian drone’s intended target was the diplomatic train, which departed the station earlier than scheduled after train timetables were adjusted in real time because of the constant threat of Russian strikes,” Ukraine’s railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, said on Telegram.
Boris Johnson, who was also on the train that left the station shortly before the strike, condemned the attack as “random and senseless” in a post on Instagram.
The drone strike on the train is a calculated escalation by Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to instil fear in Europe, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said.
“It is all the more important that we remain level-headed, that we do not allow ourselves to be provoked, but that at the same time we leave no doubt that we are capable of defending ourselves and will not back down if the situation escalates,” Pistorius told reporters in the northeastern German town of Wolgast.
“What Vladimir Putin is doing is dangerous. Russia documents strike near Zaporizhzhia nuclear power facility

In the Russian-held segment of Ukraine’s southeastern Zaporizhzhia province, the chief of Russia’s state atomic power firm Rosatom accused Ukraine of striking fuel lorries close to the Zaporizhzhia atomic power facility, Europe’s grandest.
The Zaporizhzhia atomic facility has been managed by Russia since March 2022, and remains close to the front border. A Ukrainian defense speaker did not quickly react to a request for commentary.
In Russia itself, the leader of the city of Nizhnekamsk, in the Volga River province of Tatarstan, expressed that “civilian and industrial” objectives in the city had been struck by Ukrainian drones, causing at least two fatalities and several more injuries.
Leader Radmir Belyaev did not clarify which objectives had been struck, but the city hosts a major oil factory which has been attacked in the past.
Ukrainian workers did not quickly comment on the strike on Nizhekamsk, but did express they had struck alternate factory in the southern Krasnodar province.
