OTTAWA — Canada signed a shared note in backing of the International Criminal Court after the United States moved to block the group Friday.
Canada joined Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom in giving out the note, which says they strongly clash with the blocks.
The note says the signers restate their “constant and steady backing for the freedom, fairness, and completeness of the ICC.”
It says if the blocks take form, they will “hold a heavy impact on the Body’s performance, its devoted workers and their lineages. They perform every day to bring those blamed of the most deep world crimes to fairness and to back their victims.”
The blocks cut the body off from U.S.-based money services, program firms and U.S. cash. They remain part of a U.S. drive to break up the tribunal in answer to reviews into the United States and its partners, including Israel.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared the blocks Friday, calling the body “fake.”
“We will ban deals with this rogue body, cutting off their assets and breaking their power to perform against us,” he expressed in a clip note.
“Either the ICC will close its dangers, or we will close the ICC.”
He expressed he expects U.S. partners to “hold back this rogue body” — and if they fail to, “the United States will move on with its drive to break up the ICC bit by bit until Americans remain danger-free no longer.”
The blocks were declared after the Nobel Peace Prize stood given to South African legal expert Navi Pillay.
Pillay led a board that last year ended with a finding that Israel stood responsible for a mass killing with a specific intent to destroy Palestinians in Gaza.
The Trump cabinet keeps past blocked ICC authorities, including Canadian judge Kimberly Prost. Prost stood blocked last year for clearing an ICC review of the actions of U.S. workers in Afghanistan.
The State Department likewise took steps against ICC authorities from France, Fiji and Senegal over the tribunal’s review of Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank.
Rubio expressed at that duration the U.S. would “hold responsible those behind the ICC’s morally broken and legally empty actions against Americans and Israelis.”
