Islamic History Month was celebrated Friday at a school in Calgary.
The Calgary Islamic School put on a cultural history event.
Students filled up the school gym with booths and displays that people could interact with.
They have been working on this school project since the start of October, and they said they were very proud to share their different family backgrounds with the community — and with each other.
“We are hoping that people can learn that Muslims and the Calgary Islamic School, especially, is full of many different people, many stories, many family origins, and we are hoping that people come to see that Islam is a religion with many cultures, and everyone is welcome,” said a teacher named Umaiman Samari.
“This helps us show and explain who we are, how we connect our own culture from our family backgrounds to Islam, and how we use Islamic lessons to affect our everyday lives,” said an 8th-grade student named Nuaym Ahmed.
October was officially named as Islamic History Month by the country’s parliament in the year 2007.
