NEW YORK (TNND) — One person was taken into custody Monday morning after an incendiary device exploded outside a federal building in New York City, according to the FBI.
“This morning an individual deployed an incendiary device outside of 26 Federal Plaza in New York,” FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on X. “The individual is in custody and two minor injuries reported thus far.”
He added the FBI and New York Joint Terrorism Task Force are investigating the incident.
Police told WABC that the suspect is believed to be a protester with a history of anti-ICE activity. Authorities said the makeshift incendiary device was made with fireworks and a flammable liquid.
The NYPD said investigators were also examining a cart the suspect allegedly wheeled to the scene, which they said contained fireworks and airsoft rifles. According to WABC, the cart displayed a sign reading, “ICE Off Our Streets.”
The NYPD also confirmed to Fox News that a firearm was recovered in connection with the incident but did not say whether it was found on the suspect.
According to the FDNY, three civilians suffered minor injuries. Two people refused medical attention, while a third was taken to a local hospital.
The building was placed under a shelter-in-place order out of an abundance of caution.
“What occurred outside 26 Federal Plaza this morning was deeply disturbing,” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement. “I’m relieved no one was seriously injured and that a suspect is in custody.”
Mamdani said his administration is in contact with the NYPD and will support the federal investigation.
“Our administration will continue to ensure that every New Yorker is safe in their city — and hold accountable any who threaten that,” he said.
Located in Manhattan, 26 Federal Plaza houses dozens of federal agencies, including the FBI, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Video circulating on social media showed heavy smoke outside the building as officers detained a person on the ground.
