TOKYO, Indian athlete Suchika Taryal violated the spirit of sportsmanship after suffering defeat at the Asian Games. Suchika Taryal refused to accept the defeat and, in protest, did not shake hands with her opponent or the referee. In the 60-kilogram category, Suchika refused to acknowledge the defeat and protested the referee’s decision.
The Indian athlete lost to Singapore’s Hui Hoon in the MMA semifinal.
The contest was tied at the end of the scheduled time, after which India challenged the decision. Even after the review, the judges upheld their decision.
The Indian athlete was declared defeated because she was 700 grams heavier.
Under the rules, the lighter athlete is declared the winner when a contest ends in a tie.
