CANADA — An additional Canadian citizen faces charges for his suspected involvement in a global narcotics smuggling syndicate.
The Waterloo Regional Police Service confirmed that the 24-year-old individual was apprehended at a residential property in Cambridge, Ontario, on August 26. He faces formal charges of cocaine exportation and conspiracy to commit an indictable offense.
Law enforcement authorities did not disclose the identity of the arrested man.
Previously, in September 2025, border security personnel at Hong Kong International Airport discovered 25 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside a checked piece of luggage that belonged to a female resident from Cambridge.
A 19-year-old Canadian was among four individuals arrested in Hong Kong after authorities recovered nearly 100 kilograms of cocaine from their luggage. Following an investigation by CTV News’ W5, the suspect stated she was recruited through an online job listing offering $5,000 per trip to act as an international package shipper. W5 identified Cameron DeSousa as her alleged recruiter, though he denied any knowledge of the trafficking operation and claimed he believed the contents were jewelry.
The Waterloo Regional Police Service apprehended DeSousa on August 13, levying formal charges of exporting a Schedule I substance alongside conspiracy to commit an indictable offense.
Additionally, law enforcement personnel detained a 36-year-old male resident of Markham during the month of June. The individual, identified as Alexander Kwan, faces prosecution for possession with the explicit intent of trafficking as well as possession for the purpose of illegal exportation, with investigators suspecting his role was operating as a transport driver for the designated drug couriers.
The suspected drug couriers identified their network’s mastermind as “Dot,” who used punctuation marks as a signature. Additionally, the individuals revealed to W5 that the syndicate was actively recruiting young people in the Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo areas. You can read the full investigation at W5.
The market price for cocaine hovers around $200 per gram in Hong Kong, representing a value that is more than twice the standard street rate found within Canada. The legal consequences are similarly harsh. Unless the detained Canadian citizens can successfully demonstrate that they were completely unaware of the narcotics hidden in their possessions, they could face maximum sentences of life imprisonment.
