Montreal detectives (SPVM) questioned a “person of interest” regarding Leila Ben Salem’s brutal killing inside her flat, but no individuals have been charged so far.
Detectives refused to disclose if the person, who was let go, knew or was closely connected to Ben Salem.
The inquiry is still active.
Prime Minister Mark Carney honored Ben Salem, who was a national government worker who was murdered while holding a video call with a colleague inside her Montreal flat on Tuesday.
Carney gave his deep sympathies to the dead woman’s family on Thursday inside the House of Commons.
“She was a prized worker of the Canada Revenue Agency, devoted to helping Canadian citizens, which she was actively doing during her attack,” expressed Carney.
He expressed that Canada and all politicians in the parliament will execute everything possible to assist the detectives in their inquiry “so the attacker of this disgraceful act faces the absolute penalty.”
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre likewise extended his deep sympathies to the family and close friends of Ben Salem.
Tax Office Workers Union chief Adam Jackson expressed he was “stunned and deeply saddened” by the report.
“On behalf of our labor group, I extend my truest sympathies to her family, friends and teammates,” published Jackson.
“We denounce the brutal act that claimed her lifespan. Our hearts are with all individuals mourning this awful tragedy. We stand alongside Montreal Chapter 10008 and all workers impacted by this report. We will coordinate with the chapter to assist Leïla’s teammates and remain prepared to help her family in any manner they desire. We request that their personal space be protected as they mourn.”
‘Massive tragedy’
Ben Salem’s firm likewise expressed in a report that it was deeply grieved by her heartbreaking murder.
“On behalf of the CRA, we extend our truest sympathies to her family, friends, teammates, and coworkers. Our hearts are with all individuals impacted by this massive tragedy,” a CRA speaker expressed.

The state worker and parent was murdered Tuesday afternoon while she was right in the center of an online session with a job teammate.
The tragedy took place inside a flat situated on René-Lévesque Boulevard, close to Saint-Christophe Street.
A news channel discovered that the attacker forced entry into the flat of the victim, a lady of Tunisian descent, and attacked and murdered her using a heavy item.
Detectives expressed that they answered a health safety call and declared her deceased at the spot. A probe into a doubtful demise was started, before validating that it stood the 19th murder to take place in the SPVM’s zone during 2026.
